Established in 1881 as a railroad town, Midland is located in Texas' Southern Plains and is the seat of Midland county. Eventually Midland became an oil town and to this day the petroleum industry thrives in Midland. Sibley Nature Center was started by two schoolteachers so much of its programming is geared toward children and families. In addition to trails, there are opportunities to check out geological formations, wildlife, and local flora.
