I had used Turf Master Inc. for several years for routine sprinkler services such as winter blowouts, spring startup, and occasional maintenance. Until this incident, I had not had any problems with their work. In 2025, I contacted them to come out and look at an issue with my sprinkler system. Before the work began, I asked multiple times what the cost would be or at least what the hourly rate was so I could understand what to expect. I was never given a clear answer. The owner arrived with one employee. The employee performed the actual repair work while the owner mostly stood by and observed. After the work was completed, I received a bill charging $198 per hour, essentially billing as if there were two workers actively performing the job. This was surprising for two reasons. First, the owner was not performing the repair work himself but was primarily supervising while his employee completed the work. Second, I had used this company for years and had never previously been charged anything close to $198 per hour, nor had I ever been billed for two people on a simple repair like this. Had the hourly rate or billing structure been disclosed beforehand, I would not have agreed to proceed. In the Ontario, Oregon area, most sprinkler and irrigation repair companies charge around $99 per hour or less, making this rate significantly higher than typical local pricing. My concern is primarily the lack of pricing transparency before the work was done and being billed for labor in a way that was never discussed or agreed to in advance. Because of this experience, I would recommend that customers request a written estimate and clear hourly rate before allowing work to begin.
