Lamar History

Lamar was established in 1852 and incorporated in 1867. It was given its name by Mrs. George E. Ward in honor of the President Mirabeau Lamar of the Republic of Texas. During the Civil War, Lamar was almost completely wiped out in 1862 and 1864. The town is also known for two very famous inhabitants – Wyatt Earp served as a local lawman in Lamar in the 1870s and Lamar was the birth place of the 33rd president of the United States, Harry S. Truman (his birth house is pictured to the right).
