Eureka Springs History
Eureka Springs is a unique Victorian-style resort community. It was founded in 1856 by Dr. Alvah Jackson, who claimed that the waters of Basin Spring cured his eye ailment. He treated patients with the spring water during the Civil War and later went on to market the waters as "Dr. Jackson's Eye Water" (the Ozarka Water Company was formed in Eureka Springs in 1905). In the late 1870s, continued promotion of the local springs by Judge J.B. Saunders caused the area to expand into a major city; it was incorporated on February 14, 1880.
Today, the entire city of Eureka Springs is on the National Register of Historic Places, making it a popular tourist destination. The city has historically been called "The Little Switzerland of America" and "The Stairstep Town" due to its mountainous terrain and winding streets/walkways. In fact, no two streets in Eureka Springs intersect, nor are there any traffic lights throughout the city.
