Pittsburg, Kansas became a town in 1876. As might be expected, the town took its name from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. It got its start as a stop on a railroad line and eventually became a mining town. Now it is home to Pittsburg State University as well as two community colleges. The town is home to over 20,000 people and visitors include parents of university students. Things to do include enjoying a day at the local aquatic center, checking out the area's art galleries, or learning more about the history of the area by visiting "Big Brutus," the world's largest electric shovel.
