Miami History

Miami (commonly pronounced "My-am-uh") was named after the Miami Tribe of Oklahoma, a federally recognized Native American tribe. The name comes from the Latin phonetic spelling for the Myaamia tribe. It became the first chartered town in Indian Territory, with the first post office being established in 1890 and the first plots of land being sold to new settlers in 1891.

Historic Route 66, established in the late 1920s, runs through Miami. In 1929, the historic Coleman Theatre was built by millionaire George L. Coleman in an attempt to bring culture to the community. The theater once played host to celebrities such as Will Rogers, Tom Mix, and the Three Stooges. Today, this iconic theatre is used for a variety of community functions.
