Glenwood Springs History

Glenwood Springs was established in 1883 under the town name "Defiance," which symbolized the crowd of gamblers, gunslingers, and prostitutes that inhabited the area. The name was changed to "Glenwood Springs" by town founder, Isaac Cooper, as a gesture to his wife, Sarah (she was from Glenwood, Iowa). Its location at the joining of the Colorado and Roaring Fork Rivers made it a center of commerce in the area.

Several famous visitors passed through Glenwood Springs over the years, including President Teddy Roosevelt, who spent an entire summer living at the historic Hotel Colorado. Wild West legend Doc Holliday spent the final months of his life in Glenwood Springs and is buried in the town's Pioneer Cemetery.
