Roswell was established in 1869 when Van C. Smith and Aaron Wilburn constructed two adobe buildings that eventually became the settlement's general store, post office, and first hotel. The town was named after Smith's father, Roswell Smith, and incorporated in 1873. A major aquifer was discovered in the back yard of a local merchant in 1890, which marked the beginning of the town’s growth and development period.
One of Roswell's largest claims-to-fame involves the alleged UFO incident of 1947. The incident involved a report that an alien spacecraft had crashed in the vicinity (the actual crash site was approximately 75 miles from Roswell, but was handled by the local Roswell Army Air field). Though the U.S. military cited the incident as debris recovered from a downed weather and surveillance balloon, UFO proponents have maintained that the U.S. military concealed the finding of an actual alien craft from the public.
