Artesia took on its present name in 1903 and was incorporated in 1905. The name change came after an artesian aquifer was discovered in the area. As a result, Artesia became an agricultural oasis until the depletion of artesian wells came about in the 1920s. In 1924, oil was discovered, making Artesia's oil fields an economic resource that remains to this day.
