Mt Vernon History

Mt Vernon, established in 1831, was named in honor of George Washington's residence on the Potomac River. During the American Civil War, both Union and Confederate troops were headquartered in Mt Vernon, and more than 100 different regiments camped or passed through the area during that time. One of Mt Vernon's earliest (and most famous) teachers was Harold Bell Wright, who helped make the Branson area famous through a book he wrote entitled, "The Shepherd of the Hills."
