Summer Activities in Abilene

Texas summers are hot, and Abilene is no exception. This doesn’t mean that you can’t enjoy yourself, though. In fact, this town has plenty of options for everyone: kids, teens, and adults. By taking a few precautions against excessive heat, you and your family can have a great time in Abilene.

1. Stay safe: Keep an eye on the temperature and be careful about going out in the middle of the day, when the sun is at its hottest. Stay hydrated by carrying water with you at all times. Wear sunscreen and reapply it as needed.

2. Keep cool outdoors: One of the best ways to stay cool while outdoors is to visit one of Abilene’s water recreation areas or splash pads. The Nelson Splash Pad is located next to the Abilene Zoo, so you can plan a trip to see the animals before, or after the kids cool off. Lake Fort Phantom is probably the most popular lake in the area for swimming, boating, and water skiing.

3. Seek indoor culture: When the heat gets to be too much, head indoors for awhile. The Paramount is a beautifully restored theater that offers live music, theater productions, and film screenings. History buffs will enjoy the 12th Armored Division Museum, while the Center for Contemporary Arts always has new exhibits to view.

4. Nightlife: One way to beat the heat is to go out at night. While they can still be warm, you won’t have to dodge the sun, and the thermometer does tend to drop a few degrees. There are plenty of restaurants, bars, clubs, and music venues to check out, including the Neon Parrot Lounge and The Mill Wine Bar & Event Venue.

So take some time to explore your summertime options in Abilene. You and your family can have a great time, even during the hottest months of the year.
