Paragould's name combines the last names of two competing railroad leaders whose lines intersected in the town back in 1882: J.W. Paramore of the Texas & Saint Louis Railway and Jay Gould of the St. Louis, Iron Mountain and Southern Railway. The citizens of Paragould chose the name at the time, which Gould objected to because his name was listed second. As a result, he refused to list the new town name on his train schedules. Paragould was officially incorporated in 1883.
